This weekend I donated my microwave to Goodwill. My apartment includes an over-the-range microwave, and from what I’m told microwaves sell on the work for-sale list about as well as Bed Bath & Beyond Coupons. As much as I hate to get rid of anything (especially if it actually still works), I decided it was taking up too much space lying dormant on my countertop, and I couldn’t justify ever plugging it in and pretending that I’d use it.
Immediately after dropping it off at Goodwill, I remembered that the first microwave I ever bought was from a Goodwill in Corvallis, Oregon. I was a cheap college student on co-op, with only a bike for transportation, and Goodwill was literally around the corner from my apartment (right next to a conveniently placed Cub Foods, where you had to bag your own groceries if you can believe that).
My regret over giving up a perfectly good microwave was softened by the thought that in some way I was returning the favor I got to take advantage of so many years ago.
Now, if I could just find something to do with all of these Bed Bath & Beyond coupons…
